Does surfing still remain a predominantly sport for men or something has changed in the last 10 years?
In the last 30 years, Surfing World has been always very male dominant with very few percentages of women.
In the last few years, a lot of progress is coming on the way and women are stepping up to the plate: they are likely to brush off inequality in the sport, because of the notion that a woman isnΒ΄t physically strong enough to be considered a professional.
They still have to fight stereotypes and
sexism when they’re looking for a fair shake at surfing. Even though female surfers
could be weaker in terms of strength, they make up for it by being resilient,
determined, and smart, all fundamental qualities to be able to practice this sport.
Women have indeed demonstrated to have skills and have proven many times that
they should be legitimized as competitors, and the industry is starting to take notice of
it. Just think that not so long ago, there was not a good deal of events that allowed
female surfersΒ· luckily, today there are many top competitions that let both men and
women.
Tenerife and more specifically Playa de las Americas are concrete examples of how
many talented women are currently dominating the scene.

Daniela Boldini, raised by the waves of Las Americas, began to surf at a very young age thanks to her brothers and during her career,Β she managed to receive several awards, like the international competition CabreiroΓ‘ Las Americas Pro Tenerife in 2019.Β She is also a professional skater. During the last year, she has made Instagram go wild for his crazy and viral reels making gnarly tricks with her surf skate and doing trips around the world (like the last ones in Thailand and Morocco).

The Tinerfeña Laura Coviella started surfing on the beaches of El Mèdano at the age of 11 and from that moment, she never stopped. She has been proving her skills for years and stood out among other surfers in Europe by riding powerful BIG waves, the reason why she is now considered a legend & example of female surfing!

Marcela Machado, from Uruguay based in the Canary Islands, has started to surf in El MΓ©dano and her goal has always been to rank among the firsts in order to represent her country at Tokyo Olympics. However, she has already participated in two world championships, one in France in 2017 and one in El Salvador in 2021.Β

Alex Rinder is the youngest World Champion of BodyboardΒ΄s history. As well as having two World and three European titles, she achieved a turning point when she won the Fronton KingΒ΄s annual championship in 2019, which allowed her to receive more recognition and visibility.
She was introduced to the bodyboard by her brother ( Oliver Rinder) and from that moment she fell in love with it, she began to work hard to get more media and financial interactions with the bodyboard industry.

Sofia de TomΓ‘s, who started surfing as a self-taught, immediately started to obtain victories and awards. Over time, her love for the waves has turned into art; in fact, she has been creating spectacular paintings for years, that capture all of the essence of surfing.

Maria SuΓ‘rez, only 18 years old, is considered one of the surf’s up and coming stars, as she reached 4th place in the Vissla ISA World Junior Surfing Championship held in California, and the 2nd place in the international GromSearch Final, Costa Rica!

Julia GonzΓ‘lez, originally from Gran Canaria, began to accumulate success at the age of 15, winning the Liga Surf of Gran Canaria 2017-2018 and the Rip Curl Grom Search 2018 circuit (over 16).Β

Andrea Buch, from Fuerteventura, certainly has a bright future. After only a couple of years on the island, she reached 7 podiums and 2 first places in national competitions ( under 16 and under 18 categories).
